Size of group: 6 children per group
Duration: Approximately 10 minutes to collect a few more leaves to add to the collection
20 minutes for the activity. **Note** time can vary depending on how much time is spent outside and how interested children are in the task.
Resources required:
- Lots of different leaves
- Glue
- Paper
- Paint
Overview of Activity: Involve children in a group discussion about leaves prior to the art activity to get an insight of children’s knowledge. With the activity, observe the ways that children use the leaves to form their collage.
Steps:
1. Firstly begin with a group discussion asking children what they know about leaves. Also discuss the season of autumn and what happens to the leaves in this season. At this point, the teacher may wish to show a book related to the autumn and leaves to support the conversation.
2. Show children some of the leaves already collected.
3. Ask children to collect one leaf from outside to add to this collection.
4. Set up the glue, paint and paper on the table and put leaves in a basket, placing this in the centre of the table.
5. Ask who would like to participate.
6. Form groups of 6 children.
7. Assist and supervise the experience and allow children to explore and be creative.
8. Communicate with children about their selection, this will allow them to develop language skills as they can describe the leaf.
9. Once children are completed, put work on a drying rack.
10. Finally, once artwork is dry, display the work on the wall.
